Born and raised in Bulgaria, Matio brings a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach at the highest levels of the game. A UEFA B licensed coach, he holds a Master’s in Sports Management from CUNY-Brooklyn, blending academic expertise with practical leadership in player development.

Matio’s playing career began in Bulgaria with the professional academy of Spartak Varna 1918 before competing professionally in both Bulgaria and the United States with Michigan Stars. Transitioning into coaching, he has built an impressive résumé across multiple levels of the game. He has coached at the ECNL RL level, served as the Head Coach for San Antonio Surf in the WPSL, and worked as an NCAA Division I Assistant Coach. Additionally, Matio has held multiple Director of Coaching roles, leading both boys’ and girls’ programs with a focus on developing top-tier talent and fostering a culture of excellence.

With his deep knowledge of the game and proven leadership, Matio continues to make a significant impact on the growth of elite soccer in the U.S.
